KIDS ADVENTURE HUNTING AND FISHING CAMPS

The tall grass was moist from the overnight dew and infiltrated our warm boots and jeans as we made our way across the pasture to our post. The day before we had seen a group of white-tail does come through the cedar breaks just below our spot. On that day we were just minutes too late; today we would be ready. We coveyed up in our blind and began the wait.

I was with my close friend, Danny Dollahon, and his son, Devon. Devon is 9 years old, and this was his first hunting trip. We were hunting on the CLM Ranch during a Youth Hunting Camp. I have spent many a week working on this ranch as the camp director, today I had the title of guide for the day.

The CLM is just one of many ranches and groups across Texas that now offer apprentice and advanced hunting camps. They include everything from archery, camp set-up, basic survival skills, tracking game, fishing and actual hunting. The ages for this co-educational experience are usually 9 – 17 years old.

This summer camp experience, in some cases available year-round, is truly a camp experience. Campfires, mess tents, swimming, horseplay, dirty faces and long days are typical. The Kids Outdoor Zone & Country Line Ministries, Christian Outdoor Alliance and Cross Trail Outfitters have summer camps that affirm the presence of God and a relationship with Jesus Christ. At all of these camps the counselors are as good as they get and truly care for the kids with whom they are charged.

In today’s metropolitan world it is important to immerse our children in an outdoors experience. The fast paced lifestyles of most families don’t lend credit to what can be learned by watching a mockingbird in a mesquite tree or a red ant scurrying about on a dusty trail. The moments of quiet without television or traffic, schedules and telephones are not usually a priority in our urban settings.

Just as we became comfortable in our deer blind the white-tail deer began to move into view. Bucks and does alike grazed across the calichie ranch road. There were three or four mature does we picked out. Devon had never hunted before, but his training this week was thorough and he was ready.

We slid the window open quietly as he placed his rifle on the sill. The look in his face was serious. His left eye was closed tight while he watched the deer through his scope.

“The one to the left, Devon, do you see her?” I asked in a whisper.

“Yes, sir, I see her,” he whispered back.

“Place your cross hairs just behind her shoulder and squeeze the trigger.”

It was a long pause before the .243 roared. The doe dropped with out a flinch as the other deer bolted through the cedars and tall brown grasses.

These life-changing moments are echoed many times over at these two camps. Many of the kids are repeat campers. They sit around the campfires and lay in their bunks for hours reliving those moments. Experiences not soon forgotten as they return to the world of television and video games. Maybe, just maybe, they stop a little more often and look at a bird in a tree or a deer grazing on the side of the road. Moments of quiet respect and daydreams of outdoor adventures to come.
